What Brings People to Us for Furnace Installation

The situations behind most of these calls, and what we actually do about each one.

Paying a cold-climate premium for a six-week winter

A 96% AFUE condensing furnace recovers its price premium quickly in Chicago and slowly in Chandler. The brochure never mentions how few heating hours you actually run.

We size to heating degree days for your specific address and show the payback arithmetic, so the efficiency tier is a decision you make rather than one made for you.

Heat pump or gas, with nobody willing to say which

One contractor pushes a heat pump, the next insists on gas, and neither shows the balance point or the utility rates behind the recommendation.

We calculate the balance point instead of leaving it at a default. Gas, heat pump and dual-fuel each win in different parts of our service area, and Palmdale is not Gilbert.

Replacing the furnace now, the AC next summer

Two separate projects means paying twice for the same labor visit, and a mismatched pair of components that were never commissioned together.

When both are near end of life we quote the paired replacement, which saves a labor visit and lets us commission the matched system as one.

A California install that fails inspection

Title 24 Part 6 changes what a replacement is even allowed to be, and duct testing requirements catch homeowners who were quoted a straight swap.

Title 24 compliance, permits and duct testing are handled as part of the job on our California installs, not discovered afterward.

Heating Replacement Here Rewards Restraint

In most of the country, the advice on furnace replacement is straightforward: buy the highest efficiency you can afford and the fuel savings will pay it back. That advice is correct in Chicago and misleading in Chandler.

AFUE savings scale with runtime hours. Across Greater Phoenix, a heating season might be six genuinely cold weeks. Upgrading from an 80% furnace to a 96% condensing model saves a percentage of a small number, and the condensing unit additionally requires PVC venting and a condensate drain that the 80% unit did not need. Run that arithmetic honestly and the payback frequently exceeds the equipment’s service life.

So we run it. Heating degree days for your specific address, your actual utility rates, and the real installed cost difference including venting. Then you decide with the number in front of you. Sometimes the answer is the higher tier. More often, in Arizona, the money is better spent on a better air handler or on sealing the ductwork.

Palmdale is the genuine exception in our coverage, with real freeze cycles and heating hours that change the whole calculation.

Three Ways to Heat a House

Gas furnace. Still the default across much of Arizona. Cheap fuel, simple equipment, and a short season that limits how much efficiency can save you. An 80% AFUE unit venting into an existing compliant flue is frequently the rational choice here.

Heat pump. One system for heating and cooling, rated by HSPF2 on the heating side. Increasingly the recommendation in our California service area, where heating hours are moderate, SCAQMD rules are moving against gas appliances, and incentives favour heat pumps substantially. Modern equipment holds usable capacity well below freezing, which the older reputation does not reflect.

Dual-fuel hybrid. A heat pump for the mild hours and a gas furnace below a calculated balance point temperature. Elegant in theory, and genuinely worth it in the Antelope Valley. In Phoenix or coastal Los Angeles, the hours below the balance point are so few that the second system rarely earns its cost, and we will tell you that rather than sell the more complex option.

What Determines the Balance Point

If you do go dual-fuel, the balance point is the design, and leaving it at a factory default wastes most of the benefit. It depends on:

  • Heat pump capacity at low outdoor temperatures, from the manufacturer’s extended performance data
  • Your home’s heat loss at those temperatures, from the load calculation
  • Your electricity rate against your gas rate, including time-of-use structures
  • How the thermostat and control board handle the changeover

Get it right and the gas stage runs only during hours where it is genuinely cheaper. Get it wrong and you either run expensive strip heat or burn gas during hours the heat pump could have handled for less.

Cost Guide

PathTypical installed rangeWhen it makes sense
80% AFUE gas furnace$4,200 - $6,500Short heating season, compliant existing flue
96% AFUE condensing gas$6,500 - $8,500Higher heating loads, PVC venting feasible
Heat pump conversion$6,500 - $9,500California, moderate heating hours, strong incentives
Dual-fuel hybrid$9,500 - $12,000Genuine freeze cycles, Antelope Valley
Paired with AC replacementSaves a full labor visitWhenever both are near end of life

When Replacement Beats Repair

  • The furnace is over twenty years old and needs a major component
  • Combustion analysis or inspection indicates a heat exchanger problem
  • Repeated short-cycling has produced cumulative thermal damage
  • Repair cost is approaching a third of replacement cost
  • You are already replacing the air conditioner, making the paired labor saving real

If your system has simply stopped working and you are not sure which side of that line you are on, start with furnace repair. Most heating faults are ignition components and cost a few hundred dollars.

For the deeper comparison, heat pump vs gas furnace and what AFUE rating do I need cover the trade-offs without the brochure language, and dual-fuel hybrid systems explains balance points properly.

How Much Does Furnace Installation Cost?

Why Choose Us for Furnace Installation?

We do the payback math out loud

A 96% AFUE furnace saves real money over 4,000 heating degree days and very little over 900. We show you the number for your actual location rather than selling the higher tier by default.

Replace the pair, save a visit

The furnace and the indoor coil share a cabinet in a split system. Replacing both together saves a full labor visit later and avoids a mismatched pairing.

Title 24 handled up front

California changeouts commonly trigger duct leakage testing and sealing. We price that in from the start rather than raising it at inspection.

Real dual-fuel design

A balance point calculated for your climate, not left at the factory default. In the Antelope Valley that difference is worth real money every winter.

Combustion verified on handover

Manifold pressure set with a manometer, temperature rise measured against nameplate, combustion analysed and CO tested. Not assumed from the box.

Rebates and credits identified

Utility rebate programs lean toward heat pumps over furnaces, and they differ by territory. We check before we quote.

How Our Furnace Installation Works

1

Establish the real heating load

Heating degree days for your specific address, not a regional average. Palmdale and Chandler are not the same climate and should not get the same equipment.

2

Pick fuel type honestly

Gas, heat pump or dual-fuel. We show you the operating cost math for each rather than defaulting to whatever is on the truck.

3

Check venting and gas supply

Condensing furnaces need PVC venting and a condensate drain. Existing flues are assessed for compliance before the equipment decision is final.

4

Install and commission

Usually one day. Manifold pressure set, temperature rise measured against nameplate, combustion analysed and CO tested before we leave.

What Customers Say About Our Furnace Installation

4.9 from 115+ Google reviews
They talked me out of the 96% furnace. Explained that with our heating season the payback ran past twenty years, and put the difference into a better air handler instead.
T Tony K. Chandler, AZ
We went heat pump on their recommendation and the rebate paperwork was already filled in when they handed us the folder.
L Linda & Steve G. Burbank, CA
Replaced the furnace at the same time as the AC. One crew, one day, and they showed me the readings on both before leaving.

Furnace Installation FAQs

Do I need a 96% AFUE furnace in Arizona?

Probably not, and this is the single most common place we talk a customer out of spending money. AFUE measures how much of the fuel you buy becomes usable heat, so the savings from a higher rating scale with how many hours the furnace actually runs. In a climate with 4,000 heating degree days, upgrading from 80% to 96% recovers its premium in a handful of years. Across Greater Phoenix, where a heating season might be six genuinely cold weeks, the same upgrade can take longer than the equipment's service life to pay back. Condensing furnaces also require PVC venting and a condensate drain, which adds installation cost and complexity where the existing flue would have served an 80% unit fine. There are exceptions: Palmdale, the high desert, and homes with unusually high heating loads. We run the arithmetic for your address rather than applying a rule.

Should I switch from gas to a heat pump?

In our California service area, increasingly yes. Heating hours are moderate, a heat pump covers both heating and cooling from one system, SCAQMD rules are moving against gas appliances over time, and the incentive structure favours heat pumps heavily. TECH Clean California plus individual utility programs lean heavily toward heat pumps. In Arizona the case is more balanced: gas is cheap, the heating season is short, and a heat pump's advantage is smaller. The right answer depends on your utility rates, your existing equipment and how long you plan to stay.

What is a dual-fuel hybrid system?

A heat pump paired with a gas furnace, controlled so that each runs where it is most efficient. Above a calculated balance point temperature the heat pump handles the load cheaply. Below it, heat pump output and efficiency fall off and the gas furnace takes over. The balance point is the whole design, and it needs calculating for your climate and your utility rates rather than being left at a factory default. In most of our service area dual-fuel is hard to justify, because the hours below the balance point are so few that the second system never earns its cost. Palmdale and the Antelope Valley are the genuine exception, with real freeze cycles that make the second stage pay.

How much does furnace installation cost?

A standard 80% AFUE gas furnace typically runs $4,200 to $6,500 installed. A 96% condensing furnace or a heat pump conversion lands between $6,500 and $9,500. A properly designed dual-fuel hybrid system runs $9,500 to $12,000. The variables are fuel type, efficiency tier, venting requirements, whether gas supply or electrical needs upgrading, and in California whether Title 24 duct testing applies. Replacing the furnace alongside the air conditioner usually saves a full labor visit compared to doing them separately a few years apart.

Should I replace the furnace and AC together?

Often, yes. In a split system the furnace houses the indoor blower and the evaporator coil sits directly on top of it, so replacing one means disturbing the other regardless. Doing both together saves an entire labor visit, ensures the equipment is matched as an AHRI-certified pair, and means one commissioning rather than two. If your furnace is genuinely young and your AC has failed, we will say so and replace only what needs replacing.

What is Title 24 Part 6 and does it apply to me?

It is California's building energy efficiency standard, and yes, it commonly applies to a system changeout. The most frequent requirement is duct leakage testing and sealing, which must be performed and documented as part of a compliant installation. It is not an optional extra a contractor can quietly skip, and a quote that does not include it is not a complete quote. We price it in from the beginning rather than raising it at inspection.

How long does the installation take?

A straightforward furnace changeout is usually one day. Adding a heat pump conversion, new venting, or gas supply modification can extend that to two. Dual-fuel installations typically run two days. We give you a realistic schedule at booking.

Do heat pumps work when it is genuinely cold?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold usable capacity far lower than the older reputation suggests, well below freezing. In our service area, including Palmdale, a properly sized heat pump handles the vast majority of heating hours without assistance. The question is not whether it works but how efficiently it works at the coldest hours, which is exactly what the balance point calculation answers and what dual-fuel exists to address.

What is HSPF2 and how does it compare to AFUE?

They measure different things and are not directly comparable. AFUE is combustion efficiency for a fuel-burning appliance: what percentage of the gas you buy becomes heat in the house. HSPF2 is a seasonal performance factor for heat pumps, measuring heat delivered per unit of electricity across a heating season. Comparing them meaningfully requires converting both to cost per unit of delivered heat at your actual utility rates, which is what we do rather than quoting the two numbers side by side as if they were the same scale.

Will my existing ductwork and venting work?

Ductwork gets a static pressure test, because a restrictive duct system undermines new equipment regardless of its rating. Venting depends on the equipment. An 80% AFUE furnace vents into a conventional flue, which frequently already exists and can be reused if it is compliant and correctly sized. A 96% condensing furnace produces cooler flue gases and acidic condensate, so it needs PVC venting and a condensate drain. That difference is a real installation cost and it belongs in the comparison when you are weighing efficiency tiers.

What rebates apply to heating equipment?

Arizona customers fall under APS or SRP programs depending on the meter. California customers may qualify through TECH Clean California plus their individual utility, whether that is LADWP, Southern California Edison, Glendale Water and Power or Burbank Water and Power. We identify what applies before writing your proposal so the numbers are real, and provide the AHRI documentation the programs ask for. Note that the federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment installed after December 31, 2025, so current incentives are utility and state programs.
