R-410A to R-454B: What the Refrigerant Change Means for You

What changed, whether your existing R-410A system must be replaced (it doesn't), and how the transition affects repair costs and parts availability on older equipment.

What Changed and Why

The refrigerant industry is transitioning away from R-410A toward lower global warming potential alternatives, principally R-454B and in some equipment R-32. The driver is regulatory: rules phasing down high-GWP hydrofluorocarbons.

R-410A has a high global warming potential. R-454B is substantially lower. The regulation targets what manufacturers may produce and sell, which is why new equipment is shifting to the new refrigerant while existing equipment carries on exactly as it did.

The new refrigerants are classified A2L, meaning mildly flammable. That classification changes things for installers, who need updated training, recovery equipment and leak detection practices, and it introduces code requirements around charge limits and installation.
