A flat-rate AC repair is a single number covering the diagnostic, the parts, and the labor - quoted before the work begins, and unchanged when the work is done. This page shows what the most common repairs actually cost in AZ and CA in 2026 so you can tell whether a quote is fair before anyone climbs on the roof.
Real Ranges, Not “It Depends”
These are flat-rate installed prices for the most common AC repairs in the Phoenix and Los Angeles metros. They include the diagnostic, the part, the labor, the warranty on the new part, and our 1-year workmanship warranty on the repair itself. They do not include unrelated work discovered during the diagnostic (failed ductwork, code violation corrections, full system replacement).

These are ranges, not quotes. The price on your quote depends on the specific equipment in your home, the access difficulty (rooftop vs. ground mount, attic vs. closet air handler), and whether any code-required accessories need to be added.
What Drives the Spread
Equipment tier. A Carrier, Lennox, Trane or Rheem part at OEM specification costs more than a third-party compatible part. We use OEM-spec parts on every repair because the warranty we issue is on the parts and labor, and a third-party part fails more often in the first year. The OEM part is roughly 20-40% of the total repair cost; the labor and the diagnostic fee are the rest.
Access difficulty. A ground-mounted condenser in a side yard is a 20-minute access. A rooftop condenser on a two-story home requires ladder setup and tie-off, which adds time and (in CA) sometimes a second tech. An attic air handler is more time than a closet air handler because of the access and the work posture.
Refrigerant type. R-410A (the legacy refrigerant) and R-454B (the new lower-GWP refrigerant, mandatory on new equipment manufactured after January 1, 2025) cost different amounts per pound. R-454B costs roughly twice as much per pound as R-410A. The price difference matters on a system that needs a full charge.
Time of day and day of week. Comfort Pros does not charge a same-day fee for AC repair during normal hours. We do charge an after-hours emergency fee (defined as before 7am or after 7pm weekdays, before 8am or after 4pm Saturday, and before 9am or after 3pm Sunday, plus all holidays). The after-hours fee is on the quote before the work begins. Care N’Comfort members get priority emergency dispatch with no after-hours upcharges.
Code-required accessories. A capacitor swap in AZ and CA is the same scope most of the time. A refrigerant service that requires opening the refrigerant circuit triggers leak-test verification in some CA jurisdictions, which adds a small permit fee. We tell you about the code-required accessories during the diagnostic, before the quote is written.
The Most Common Failure Parts - and Why They Fail
Dual run capacitor - the most common repair in residential AC, period. The capacitor stores the energy that starts the compressor and the condenser fan. AZ and CA desert heat kills capacitors faster than the national average - a capacitor that would last 8-10 years in Minneapolis lasts 4-6 in Phoenix. The failure mode is a capacitor that has dropped below its rated microfarad value, which makes the compressor hard to start. We carry capacitors on every truck because it is the most common part we replace.
Contactor - the high-voltage switch that cycles the compressor on the call from the thermostat. The contactor has silver contacts that wear with every cycle. AZ and CA units cycle more than national-average units because the cooling season is longer, which wears the contactor faster. A pitted contactor makes a chattering noise on startup and eventually fails to close, which means the compressor never gets the signal to run. We carry contactors on every truck.
Condenser fan motor - the motor that pulls air through the outdoor coil. The bearings wear out, the windings can short, and the motor can seize. A seized motor will trip the compressor’s internal overload and shut the system down. We carry common condenser fan motors on the truck. Less common motors (specific OEM-only models) require a parts order.
Blower motor - the motor that moves air through the indoor coil and the ductwork. ECM (variable-speed) blower motors last 10-15 years; PSC (single-speed) blower motors last longer. A failed blower motor shows up as a system that is running but not moving any air. We carry common blower motors on the truck.
Refrigerant leak - the leak itself, not the refrigerant. A system that needs refrigerant has a leak somewhere - a Schrader valve, a brazed joint, a corroded coil, a rubbed-through line set. We find the leak with an electronic detector, repair it, evacuate the system, and recharge by weight. We do not top off refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak.
When Repair Stops Making Sense
A repair is the right call when:
- The system is under 10 years old
- The failure part is normal wear (capacitor, contactor, blower motor)
- The system has not had multiple prior repairs
- The refrigerant lines and coils are intact
A replacement is the right call when:
- The system is over 12-15 years old
- The failure is the compressor (the most expensive part)
- The system has had multiple prior repairs in the past 3 years
- The refrigerant lines are corroded or the coil is failing
- The system uses R-22 (the legacy refrigerant that has been phased out, and is now several times the cost of R-410A)
The diagnostic covers the inspection that determines which case applies. We show you the repair-vs-replace math on the same page - what the repair costs, what the replacement costs through TrueQuote AI, and what the expected remaining life is either way - so you decide with real numbers.
What a Comfort Pros Quote Looks Like
Every AC repair quote is a flat-rate number on a single page. It includes the diagnostic fee (already paid), the part, the labor, the warranty on the part (typically 1 year manufacturer, lifetime on capacitors and contactors installed by us), and the 1-year workmanship warranty on the repair itself.
| Line item (AZ capacitor swap example) | What’s in it |
|---|---|
| Dual run capacitor (OEM-spec, sized for the unit) | 5 microfarad dual, matched to compressor and fan ratings |
| Labor | Tech time on site, multimeter verification of the failed part, installation, post-install test |
| 1-year workmanship warranty | On the labor, in addition to manufacturer warranty on the part |
| Lifetime parts warranty | On the capacitor, because we install enough of them that we are confident in them |
The number on the bottom is the number on the invoice. There is no add-on for “found something else,” no discovered-extras invoice mailed after the work is done.
If You Are Holding a Quote Right Now
A few things to compare, in order:
- Is the diagnostic fee credited to the repair, or is it on top? Comfort Pros credits it.
- Is the price flat-rate (quoted before work starts) or hourly-plus-parts? Comfort Pros is flat-rate.
- Is the warranty on the parts AND the labor, or parts only? Comfort Pros warranty is both.
- Is the company quoting OEM-spec parts or the cheapest compatible? Comfort Pros uses OEM-spec.
