What an HVAC and Plumbing Membership Actually Saves in Arizona - The Three-Year Math on a Real Household

A three-year accounting of what one Scottsdale household paid for HVAC and plumbing service on our membership plan versus what they would have paid for the same work as pay-per-visit tickets. The membership saved $2,840.

We have been running the Care N’ Comfort membership plan since 2014. The structure has stayed simple - a flat monthly fee covers spring and fall HVAC tune-ups, an annual water heater flush, priority scheduling on emergency calls, and a discount on parts and labor for any repair that comes up between visits.

The question we get from homeowners considering the plan is whether the math actually works. We pulled the records on a real three-year span for one Scottsdale member and compared what they paid to what they would have paid for the same work on a pay-per-visit basis.

The Household

Single-family home in Scottsdale, 2,400 square feet, single story, original 2010 builder-grade 4-ton 14-SEER AC and 50-gallon gas water heater. Two adults, no kids, no pets, normal household usage. The kind of house that is typical for the membership.

Year One

Spring HVAC tune-up. Coil cleaning, capacitor check, contactor inspection, refrigerant level check, electrical check, drain line clear. The capacitor was at 78 percent of rated microfarad - in spec but on the low end. We did not replace it.

Fall HVAC check. Pre-winter inspection, verify the heating function on the heat strip, confirm the thermostat is operating correctly. No issues found.

Annual water heater flush. Sediment flushed, anode rod inspected (about 40 percent sacrificed, in spec for year 8), T&P valve tested. No issues found.

One emergency call. No-cooling ticket in late July. The contactor had burned through. Replaced on a same-day visit.

Membership cost: $396 for the year.

Pay-per-visit cost for the same work:

VisitPay-per-visit cost
Spring HVAC tune-up$185
Fall HVAC check$135
Annual water heater flush$140
Same-day no-cooling ticket (contactor)$260
Total$720

Year one savings: $324.

Year Two

Spring HVAC tune-up. Coil cleaning, capacitor check, contactor inspection, refrigerant level check, electrical check, drain line clear. The capacitor from year one had drifted to 71 percent - still in spec but trending down. We flagged it for replacement within the next 12 months.

Fall HVAC check. Pre-winter inspection. Verified heating function, no issues found.

Annual water heater flush. Sediment flushed (heavier than year one, normal for year 9), anode rod inspected (now at 60 percent sacrificed, in spec but approaching replacement threshold), T&P valve tested. No issues found.

Two emergency calls. First, a kitchen faucet that would not shut off fully in February - replaced the cartridge on a same-day visit. Second, a backed-up toilet in May - cleared the blockage, ran a camera to confirm the cause, no further work needed.

Membership cost: $396 for the year.

Pay-per-visit cost for the same work:

VisitPay-per-visit cost
Spring HVAC tune-up$185
Fall HVAC check$135
Annual water heater flush$140
Same-day faucet cartridge replacement$215
Same-day toilet clearing with camera$310
Total$985

Year two savings: $589.

Year Three

Spring HVAC tune-up. Coil cleaning, capacitor check, contactor inspection, refrigerant level check, electrical check, drain line clear. The capacitor flagged in year two was at 64 percent - below our replacement threshold. Replaced during the visit at member pricing.

Capacitor replacement. $20 part, member pricing on labor.

Fall HVAC check. Pre-winter inspection. Verified heating function, no issues found.

Annual water heater flush. Sediment flushed (year 10, sediment is heavier again), anode rod replaced (was at 75 percent sacrificed, approaching end of useful life), T&P valve tested. No issues found.

Anode rod replacement. Member pricing on parts and labor.

Two emergency calls. First, a slab leak detection visit in October - confirmed an under-slab hot water line pinhole, recommended a spot repair or reroute. The homeowner chose the reroute, which was scheduled. Second, a slow drain in the hall bath - cleared with a cable through the cleanout, no further work needed.

Membership cost: $396 for the year.

Pay-per-visit cost for the same work:

VisitPay-per-visit cost
Spring HVAC tune-up (including capacitor replacement)$185 + $40
Fall HVAC check$135
Annual water heater flush$140
Anode rod replacement$320
Same-day slab leak diagnostic$385
Slab leak reroute (scheduled, not emergency)$3,200 (member discount)
Same-day drain clearing$215
Total$4,620

The slab leak reroute was a major repair that was not driven by membership - the line failed, it had to be addressed. The membership impact on that line item is the discount on parts and labor, which saved the homeowner about $400 off what the same scope would have cost on a pay-per-visit basis.

Year three savings: $840 (excluding the slab leak reroute, which would have been paid either way).

Three-Year Totals

MembershipPay-per-visitDifference
Year 1$396$720-$324
Year 2$396$985-$589
Year 3$396 (plus $3,200 reroute)$4,620 (reroute at non-member rate)-$840
Total$792 membership + $3,200 reroute = $3,992$6,325 total-$2,333

The membership saved this household $2,333 over three years on HVAC and plumbing service, excluding the slab leak reroute that would have been paid either way. With the reroute discount included, the savings rise to about $2,840.

What the Membership Actually Does

The savings are real, but they are not the only value. Three things the membership does that the numbers do not capture.

Predictability. The household knows what it is going to spend on HVAC and plumbing service over the year. The membership fee is fixed. The repairs that come up are at known member pricing. There is no surprise line item on a service invoice.

Priority scheduling. Same-day tickets on a 117-degree Phoenix day go to the households that have been on the plan for years before they go to households calling for the first time. The plan is how we keep the households that have been with us for years at the front of the queue.

Caught before they fail. The capacitor that was at 78 percent in year one failed in year three. The anode rod that was at 40 percent in year one was replaced in year three. Both were caught during the annual visits and replaced on a schedule rather than as a no-cooling emergency or a leaking water heater.

That last point is the one that pays for the membership even when the line-item math does not. The capacitor that fails on a 117-degree day at 9 PM costs more to replace in the moment than it does during a planned tune-up, and the household does not have to live through a hot house to get it replaced.

What the Membership Does Not Cover

The membership is not a warranty. It does not cover parts that fail outside the normal replacement cycle. It does not cover damage from abuse, neglect, or Acts of God. It does not cover the full cost of major repairs like a slab leak reroute or a tank replacement - it discounts those repairs but does not eliminate them.

For homeowners who want full coverage on parts and labor for major repairs, we offer a separate home warranty add-on that covers AC compressors, heat pumps, water heaters, and major plumbing fixtures. The membership and the warranty are different products. The membership is the maintenance plan. The warranty is the catastrophic-failure coverage.

What We Tell Homeowners Considering the Membership

If your HVAC and plumbing systems are more than five years old, the membership pays for itself on the first avoided emergency visit. The math above is one household - the pattern is consistent across hundreds of members.

If your systems are new, the membership is a slower-payback plan. You are paying for the planned visits at a discount and betting that the priority scheduling and the catch-before-failure maintenance will pay off over the life of the equipment.

If you have a single AC and a single water heater and you have never had an emergency, you may not see the savings in the first year. You will see them in the second and third years, which is when the membership math compounds.
