The right answer depends on your blower, not on which filter has the highest number. MERV rating measures how effectively a filter captures particles, and a higher rating captures more, but it also resists airflow more. The better structural answer is usually a four or five inch media cabinet, which offers far more surface area, so it can achieve a high capture rate at much lower resistance and last months rather than weeks. We take a static pressure reading first and recommend from that number. ### Does anything actually help during wildfire smoke season? Yes, but not a standard filter. Wildfire smoke particulate is extremely fine, well below the size a typical one-inch filter captures reliably, which is why a house can smell of smoke with the system running. What works is a combination: a deep media filter with a genuinely high capture rate at low resistance, and in many homes an active whole-home air purifier integrated into the ductwork. Haboob dust is coarser and arrives in enormous quantity, so the problem is loading: a filter that was fine last week is packed after one storm, and a condenser coil can foul enough to cost real cooling capacity. The answer there is surface area and frequency, meaning a deep media cabinet and a shorter replacement interval, plus a coil wash after major events. Smoke is the opposite problem, small volume of very fine particulate, where capture efficiency matters more than capacity. Equipment that solves one does not automatically solve the other. ### Do UV-C lamps work? For what they are actually for, yes. A UV-C germicidal lamp positioned to illuminate the evaporator coil and drain pan is effective against the biological growth that develops on a permanently wet surface. The variables are your existing equipment, whether the return plenum can accept a deep cabinet without modification, and how much integration work the air handler needs. ### Will better filtration make my system work harder? Done wrong, absolutely, and that is the whole reason we measure. Done right, no. Moving from a restrictive one-inch filter to a properly sized four-inch media cabinet frequently reduces static pressure while improving capture, because the surface area increase outweighs the density increase. Across most of Arizona, indoor humidity is naturally low and the more common problem is a correctly sized system dehumidifying adequately during monsoon season. A four or five inch media filter typically lasts six to twelve months in the same conditions, which is part of its appeal. ### Can poor air quality damage my HVAC system? Yes, in two ways. Particulate that gets past a poor filter deposits on the evaporator coil, insulating it and reducing heat transfer, which cuts capacity and raises runtime.
