# Why Hard Water Kills Arizona Water Heaters Early

## The Number That Explains Everything

Municipal water across Maricopa County commonly tests between 15 and 25 grains per gallon.

Water is classified as hard above roughly 7 grains per gallon. We routinely run at two to three times that, which puts this among the harder water in the country. Every water heater installed here is operating in conditions the manufacturer’s rated life did not assume.

That single fact explains the pattern we see constantly: tanks rated for ten to twelve years failing at six to eight, and homeowners on their second or third unit within a decade wondering what they are doing wrong. They are not doing anything wrong.

## Two Mechanisms, Working Simultaneously

**Sediment insulating the burner.** As water heats, dissolved calcium and magnesium come out of solution and settle on the bottom of the tank. In a gas unit, that is directly over the burner. The sediment layer acts as insulation between the burner and the water it is supposed to heat, so the burner runs longer and hotter for the same output. Fuel consumption rises, the tank steel is stressed by higher local temperatures, and efficiency falls year on year.

**Accelerated anode rod consumption.** Inside every tank is a sacrificial anode rod, usually magnesium or aluminium, whose entire job is to corrode preferentially so the steel tank does not. In hard water it is consumed considerably faster than the design assumed. Once it is gone, the tank has no internal protection and the steel itself starts corroding.

The second mechanism is the one that actually ends the tank’s life, and it happens silently. There is nothing to see and nothing to hear until water appears on the floor.

## Tankless Is Not Immune

Tankless units do not have a tank to corrode, which people sometimes take to mean hard water does not affect them. It does, differently.

Scale forms on the condensing heat exchanger, which is a much tighter passage than a tank. Flow rate drops, the unit works harder to hit setpoint, and eventually error codes appear. Descaling is not an optional maintenance item on a tankless unit in this water, it is a requirement, and it is why we fit isolation service valves at installation so the job is straightforward.

## The Softener Conversation

A water softener removes the calcium and magnesium responsible for both failure mechanisms, and the benefits extend well past the water heater:
