# Where a Ductless Mini Split Works Best

Garages, additions, casitas, converted patios and pre-1960 California homes without ducts - plus the insulation prerequisites and where a mini split is the wrong answer.

## The Spaces Mini Splits Were Made For

A mini split is not a general-purpose alternative to central air. It is the right answer to a specific problem: conditioning a space your ductwork does not serve.

**Converted garages.** The single most common request we get in Arizona. A garage becomes a workshop, gym or office and turns out to be unusable from May to September.

**Room additions.** Built after the original system was sized, and often fed by a duct run extended past what it can properly serve.

**Casitas and guest quarters.** Detached or semi-detached, with no practical way to extend the main system to them.

**Converted patios and sunrooms.** Heavy glass, high solar gain, and usually no supply at all.

**Pre-1960 California homes with no ductwork.** Burbank, Pasadena and much of older Los Angeles. Wall furnaces, no central air, and no duct chases to retrofit into without a construction project.

**One room that has always been uncomfortable.** Where the duct run is too long or too small and rebalancing has never fixed it.

## Sizing a Single Space Is Not Sizing a House

A common mistake is applying whole-home rules of thumb to a single room, which produces an oversized head.

Oversizing punishes an inverter system particularly hard, because inverters are at their most efficient running continuously at low output. A correctly sized head spends most of its life running quietly at thirty or forty percent, which is where the efficiency numbers come from. An oversized one cycles between minimum output and off, which is noisier, less efficient and worse at removing humidity.

Single-space sizing has to account for:

| Ceiling exposure | A room directly under an unconditioned attic carries much higher load |
| Glass area and orientation | Converted patios are dominated by this factor |

| How the space is used | Occasional storage versus a daily-use office |

## Where a Mini Split Is the Wrong Answer

We would rather say this than sell one that disappoints.

**Your central system works and the ducts are sound.** If one room is warm, the cause is usually duct sizing, a disconnected run, or balancing. Fixing that costs less and works better than adding a second system.

**You need four or more zones and have serviceable ductwork.** Past three or four zones, central air frequently costs less per conditioned square foot. Run the comparison rather than assuming.

**The space is uninsulated and you are not fixing that.** A mini split in an unsealed garage will run constantly, cost a lot to operate and still underperform on the worst days.

**You object to a visible indoor head.** Ceiling cassettes and concealed duct units exist and solve this, but they cost more and the constraint should be settled before equipment is chosen.

## Aesthetics and Placement

The indoor head is visible, and that bothers some people more than others. Options in rough order of cost:

-   **Wall-mounted head.** Cheapest, most common, mounted high on a wall.
-   **Floor console.** Sits low, useful under a window or where wall space is limited.
-   **Ceiling cassette.** Flush in the ceiling, discreet, more installation work.
-   **Concealed duct unit.** Hidden in a soffit or closet feeding one or two conventional-looking grilles. The usual answer in historic Pasadena homes.

Outside, the condenser needs a location with clearance and a sensible line set route. On a casita or a garage that is generally straightforward. On a historic property with review requirements, it is worth settling before anything is ordered.

It will help substantially, but insulating first changes the outcome enormously. Both put an enormous load on whatever equipment you install. Insulating the door and the ceiling first cuts the required capacity, reduces running cost permanently, and frequently means a smaller and cheaper mini split does a better job than a larger one would have without the insulation.

### Can one mini split cool a whole house?

Only a small open-plan one. Air from a single indoor head has to physically travel to every space, and doors, hallways and corners defeat that quickly. Most homes need either a multi-zone system with a head in each area or conventional central air. A single head in a hallway conditioning a whole house is a common attempt and a reliable disappointment.

### Do mini splits heat as well as cool?

Yes. Nearly all modern mini splits are heat pumps and reverse to provide heating. That is a large part of why they suit casitas, additions and pre-1960 California homes: those spaces frequently have no heat source either, and one system solves both problems without adding a gas appliance.
