# Dual-Fuel Hybrid Systems: When a Gas Backup Is Worth It

How a dual-fuel system switches between heat pump and furnace, what balance point temperature means, and which service-area climates justify the extra equipment cost.

## What a Dual-Fuel System Actually Is

A heat pump and a gas furnace installed together, sharing the same ductwork and air handling, with a control that decides which one runs.

Above a certain outdoor temperature the heat pump handles heating, moving existing heat into the house at a cost per delivered BTU that beats burning gas. Below that temperature, heat pump output and efficiency both fall while the house’s heat loss rises, and at some point burning gas becomes cheaper. The control switches over automatically.

That crossover point is called the balance point, and it is the entire design.

Cooling, in both cases, is provided by the heat pump. The gas furnace exists only for the coldest hours.

## The Balance Point, Properly

Three inputs determine it:

**Heat pump capacity at temperature.** Every heat pump has extended performance data showing output at various outdoor temperatures. Capacity falls as it gets colder.

**Your home’s heat loss at temperature.** From the load calculation. Loss rises as it gets colder.

**Your rate ratio.** Cost per kilowatt-hour against cost per therm, including any time-of-use structure. This is the input that varies most between customers and the one most often ignored.

Plot the first two and they cross somewhere. Apply the third and you find the economically optimal switching temperature, which is not necessarily the same as the capacity crossover.

> Set it too high and the gas stage runs during hours the heat pump could have handled cheaply. Set it too low and you run the heat pump inefficiently at temperatures where gas was the better answer. Neither is a small effect over a season.

The pattern is straightforward. You are paying to install and maintain a second heat source. That second heat source has to run enough hours to save more than it cost. In most of our service area it simply does not.

## The Exception Worth Knowing

There is one situation where dual-fuel makes sense outside the high desert: you already have a young, serviceable gas furnace and you are adding or replacing the cooling side.

In that case the second heat source already exists and is paid for. Installing a heat pump as the cooling system, keeping the furnace, and setting up dual-fuel controls costs only the controls and the configuration. That is a genuinely good deal, and it is a different proposition from buying both appliances new.

## Maintenance Implications

Two heat sources means two sets of maintenance requirements, which is a real if modest cost:

-   Gas furnace: combustion testing, carbon monoxide check, ignition components, flue inspection
-   Heat pump: refrigerant readings, reversing valve and defrost operation, coil condition
-   Controls: verifying the changeover is actually happening at the intended temperature

That last item gets skipped constantly, and a dual-fuel system whose changeover has drifted or was never configured properly is just an expensive way to own two systems.

## The Simpler Alternative Most People Should Take

For most of our service area, the honest recommendation is a correctly sized heat pump on its own. It handles essentially the entire heating season, it provides your cooling, it is where the remaining utility incentives concentrate, and it is one system to maintain rather than two.

### What is a balance point temperature?

It is the outdoor temperature below which running the gas furnace costs less than running the heat pump, and the control switches over there automatically. It is determined by three things: how much capacity your heat pump delivers as outdoor temperature falls, how much heat your house is losing at that temperature, and the ratio of your electricity rate to your gas rate. Because two of those three are specific to your house and your utility, a balance point left at a factory default is almost certainly wrong, and getting it wrong wastes most of the benefit the system was bought for.

### Is dual-fuel worth it in Phoenix?

Usually not. Phoenix rarely gets cold enough for the gas stage to run for enough hours to earn back the cost of installing a second heat source and the controls to manage it. You are paying for capability that sits idle. A correctly sized heat pump handles essentially the entire Phoenix heating season on its own, which is a simpler and cheaper system.
