# Signs Your AC Capacitor or Contactor Is Failing

Hard starting, humming, clicking or intermittent cooling? Here's how a dying capacitor or contactor behaves before it strands you, and why 110-degree heat kills them early.

## What These Two Parts Actually Do

Two small electrical components sit between your thermostat calling for cooling and your compressor actually running. Both fail predictably in this climate, both announce themselves before they quit entirely, and both are inexpensive to replace if you catch them in the announcement phase.

The **dual run capacitor** stores and releases the energy surge the compressor and fan motor need to start, then helps keep them running efficiently. Think of it as the electrical equivalent of a starter battery that also smooths the ride.

The **contactor** is the heavy-duty switch that connects line voltage to the compressor when the thermostat calls. It physically pulls closed thousands of times a season, and its contact surfaces take an electrical arc every time.

## The Symptom Checklist

-   **Intermittent cooling.** Works in the morning, gives up in the afternoon. Heat is the variable, and it is the giveaway.
-   **The AC runs but the fan does not.** Often the fan side of a dual run capacitor has failed while the compressor side still works.
-   **Breaker tripping.** A compressor drawing high locked-rotor amperage while failing to start will eventually trip the breaker.

## Why 110-Degree Heat Kills Them Early

A capacitor’s rated life assumes a maximum operating temperature. Inside a metal cabinet sitting in direct sun on a 115-degree afternoon, the ambient temperature around that component is far higher than the air temperature outside it.

The dielectric material that stores charge degrades progressively with heat. As it degrades, capacitance falls below the rated microfarad value. A capacitor at 70 percent of rating will still start the compressor on a mild April morning, when head pressure is low and the compressor’s starting load is easy. It will not do it in July, when head pressure is high and the compressor needs everything the capacitor was designed to deliver.

That is the entire mechanism behind the seasonal pattern: parts that were measurably weak in spring fail during the first serious heat wave.

The contactor fails differently but on the same schedule. Every closure produces a small arc, and over thousands of cycles the contact surfaces pit and pit further. A pitted contactor makes unreliable electrical contact, which produces intermittent operation and eventually welds shut or fails open entirely.

### How long does an AC capacitor last in Arizona?

Typically three to five years here, against eight to ten in milder climates.
