# Pasadena Sewer Lateral: We Lined 48 Feet of Pipe Under a 50-Year-Old Driveway Without Digging

Rachel M. called from a 1968 ranch in Pasadena with a backup that had happened for the third time in eighteen months. Each time a different plumber had run a cable through the cleanout, opened the blockage, and left. Each time the bill was reasonable. Each time the problem came back on its own schedule.

We ran the camera before we said anything about scope. The footage told the story. Forty-eight feet of clay sewer lateral from the house to the city tap, every joint packed with root mass, the pipe wall still largely intact but the joints permanently compromised. Every cable clearing was punching a hole through the root mass to get flow going. The roots were still there, and they were growing back.

## What the Other Quotes Were

Two of the three quotes Rachel had collected were for open-cut excavation. Both ran between $18,000 and $24,000. The third quote, from a different company, was for cured-in-place lining at $9,400. The first two companies told her lining was not appropriate for her line. We needed to understand why before we recommended anything, so we pulled the city main location maps and measured the depth at the cleanout.

The lateral was four feet deep at the house and dropped to about seven feet where it tied into the city main. The driveway was original 1968 concrete, the magnolia tree in the front yard was older than Rachel had lived there, and the path of the lateral went under both. Excavation meant breaking the driveway, removing or severely damaging the magnolia, and excavating to seven feet in the caliche-like soil that is common in this part of Pasadena. That was the $22,000 price.

## Why Lining Was Actually the Right Answer Here

Cured-in-place lining is not appropriate for every failing lateral. It needs the host pipe to be largely intact - the liner bridges small gaps and seals joints, but it cannot bridge a fully collapsed section. Rachel’s lateral was old clay, but the camera footage showed the pipe wall was largely intact. The joints were the failure, not the pipe material itself, and that is exactly what lining is designed to address.

Lining seals every joint from the inside. Roots cannot re-enter a joint that no longer exists. The new interior surface is smoother than the original, which actually improves flow. And the work happens through the existing cleanout - no excavation, no driveway demolition, no magnolia removal.

The two excavation contractors were not wrong to recommend excavation as the conservative answer. They were quoting the scope they were set up to perform. Lining is a different specialty with different equipment, and most excavation-first plumbing companies do not staff it. That is why Rachel had three wildly different numbers.

## What the Lining Job Looked Like

**Camera and locate.** We ran the camera from the cleanout to the city tap, recorded the footage, marked depth and location at every joint, and confirmed the host pipe was sound enough to accept a liner. We also located the lateral from the surface with a tracer so the install team knew exactly where the pipe was when they inverted the liner.

**Clean and clear the cut.** We ran a chain flail through the lateral to remove the root mass and any scale or debris from the pipe wall. A dirty host pipe means a poor bond between the liner and the pipe wall. The chain flail scoured the wall back to clean clay.

**Liner inversion.** The liner is a resin-saturated felt tube that gets inverted into the host pipe using water pressure. The tube travels through the pipe, pressing itself against the wall as it goes, until it has covered every foot from the cleanout to the city tap. The resin cures in place, typically in two to four hours, forming a new pipe inside the old one.

**Robotically reinstate the branch connections.** After the liner cured, we sent a robotic cutter back through to reopen the branch lines that tie into the lateral. Without this step every branch connection in the house would still be sealed shut.

**Final camera and recording.** Another camera run after the reinstatement, with the recording provided to Rachel. Every joint sealed, every branch reinstated, full length from cleanout to city tap.

## The Number

| Line item | What it covered |
| --- | --- |
| Camera inspection | Recorded run from cleanout to city tap |
| Mechanical root and scale clearing | Chain flail through full length |
| Cured-in-place liner | 48 ft of 4-inch liner, resin, inversion |
| Branch reinstatement | Robotic cutter reopening 3 branch connections |
| Post-install camera | Recorded verification run |
| Permit | City of Pasadena sewer permit |

Total: $8,900 flat-rate, including permit. That was about $400 less than the third quote Rachel had collected, mostly because we already had a recorded condition of the line from the diagnostic visit and we did not need to repeat the locate work.

## What Rachel Got That Excavation Would Not Have Given Her

Her driveway and her magnolia. The work was completed in one day. She had a 50-year warranty on the liner material itself and a 10-year warranty on the install. The lateral will not back up from root intrusion at the joints, because the joints are no longer there.

What lining does not do is address a fully collapsed section, a belly in the pipe that has settled, or a host pipe so degraded that the wall cannot support the liner. That is the boundary condition. We confirmed by camera before we recommended, and we would have told Rachel honestly if her line fell outside what lining could fix. It did not, and the savings on excavation paid for a substantial amount of the rest of the house.
