# The $49 Drain Special That Cost a Chandler Homeowner Three Service Trips and a Camera Bill

A cheap drain clearing cleared the blockage but missed what was causing it. Six months and three backups later, the actual problem was a clay tile with root intrusion. The $49 special cost more than the right answer would have.

The first backup happened on a Friday night in March. Mark S. had guests coming and did what most homeowners do in that moment - he searched for the cheapest drain clearing available and booked the first company that picked up. Forty-nine dollars got a technician to the house within two hours with a cable machine. The cable went in, the water started flowing, the invoice was signed, the guests arrived.

Six months later the same drain backed up again. A different company, same outcome - cable, water flowing, invoice signed. The next month, a third backup. By the time Mark called us he had paid for three separate service calls and was looking at a fourth, and the total of what he had spent was already higher than what one proper diagnosis would have cost.

## What a Cheap Drain Clearing Actually Does

A cable snake - sometimes called a drain auger or a Roto-Rooter machine - is a steel cable with a cutting tip that spins through the pipe. The cutting tip bores through whatever is in the way. It punches a hole through a blockage. Water starts flowing.

What it does not do is clean the pipe wall. The cable cuts through the center of the blockage and leaves the rest of the pipe coated with whatever caused the backup in the first place. For a one-time blockage from a foreign object or a small grease dam, that is fine. For a recurring cause - roots, scale, grease lining the full pipe diameter, a belly in the line that collects debris - the cable just reopens the same hole each time and the cause continues to develop.

## What Was Actually Wrong

We ran the camera before we ran any equipment. The footage showed a section of the kitchen branch line where the pipe wall was lined with a thick layer of grease that had built up over years of hot water and dish detergent carrying cooking fat down the drain. Beyond the grease, at the transition to the main line, there was a clay tile joint with visible root intrusion.

The cheap cable clearings had punched through both problems and left them in place. The water flowed because the hole was open. The pipe wall was still lined with the material that was narrowing the diameter in the first place, and the root intrusion was still growing.

## What the Right Answer Looked Like

**Hydro jet the branch line.** High-pressure water scoured the grease lining back to bare pipe. The difference between a cable-cleared line and a hydro-jetted line is the difference between a hole through the blockage and a clean pipe wall. Camera after the jetting showed the full diameter restored.

**Camera the main line at the transition.** Confirmed the root intrusion at the clay tile joint and located it relative to the cleanout and the city tap. Measured the depth of the line at the failure point.

**Recommend a permanent answer for the root intrusion.** Hydro jetting clears roots for a season. It does not stop them from coming back. The options on the root intrusion are mechanical root cutting every 12 to 24 months, hydro jetting on the same cycle, or a permanent repair - either excavation and replacement of the failed section, or cured-in-place lining if the host pipe is sound enough to accept a liner.

Mark chose cured-in-place lining because the rest of the line was in good condition and the only joint with root intrusion was at the transition. We lined 22 feet of the main line through the existing cleanout, reinstated the branch connection, and verified with a final camera run. The roots cannot re-enter a joint that no longer exists.

## What Mark Actually Paid

| Service | Cost |
| --- | --- |
| First cheap drain clearing (cable, March) | $49 |
| Second cheap drain clearing (cable, September) | $89 |
| Third cheap drain clearing (cable, October) | $129 |
| Subtotal paid before calling us | $267 |

| Our scope | Cost |
| --- | --- |
| Camera inspection (recorded, with findings explained) | $295 |
| Hydro jetting of kitchen branch line | $580 |
| Cured-in-place lining of main line, 22 ft, with branch reinstatement | $4,800 |
| Final camera verification | included |
| Subtotal our scope | $5,675 |

**Net difference:** Mark paid $267 for three temporary fixes that did not address the cause, and then paid $5,675 for a permanent answer. If he had skipped the three cable clearings and gone straight to the camera diagnosis in March, the total would have been $5,675 once instead of $5,942 across nine months.

The $49 special was not actually $49. It was $267 in service calls, plus nine months of recurring backups, plus the cost of the actual repair on top of all of it.

## When a Cheap Drain Clearing Is the Right Answer

For a one-time blockage - a child’s toy stuck in a trap, a paper wad packed in a closet bend, food that went down a kitchen sink that should not have - a cable clearing is the correct scope. The blockage is the problem, the cable removes it, the pipe is fine behind it.

For a recurring blockage, the cheap clearing is the wrong answer. The third backup on the same drain is not bad luck. The pipe is telling you that something is going on that a hole through the center is not going to fix. The camera is the answer, not a fourth cable.

## What We Tell Homeowners Who Ask About the Cheap Special

A $49 drain clearing has its place. It is also the most expensive drain clearing you can buy if the problem turns out to be something a cable cannot fix. The cheap special is priced to get a technician to your house fast. The pricing assumes the problem is one the technician can solve on the first visit. If the problem is not that, the special is just a more expensive way to delay the real diagnosis.

We will run a cable on a one-time blockage. We will also tell you when the cable is the wrong scope, and what the right scope costs, so you can make the decision with the actual numbers in front of you.
