## Why $27, and Why It Matters

An eight-month cooling season puts more runtime on a Southwest air conditioner in two years than a northern system sees in five. The Sonoran Desert dust load fouls a condenser coil faster than any national maintenance guidance assumes. And the components most likely to strand you, capacitors above all, degrade faster the hotter it gets.

Given that, seasonal maintenance is not optional here. So we priced it at $27 per unit, which is roughly the cost of the technician’s hour and no more.

The pricing is the point. A “free” inspection is a marketing expense, and marketing expenses have to be recovered somewhere, which is why free inspections so reliably end in a replacement quote. At $27 the visit can be what it says it is: an hour of measurement.

## What Gets Measured

The Tru Tune-Up produces numbers, not checkmarks. Every one of these goes on a sheet you keep:

-   **Subcooling and superheat.** The two readings that reveal charge accuracy, metering device behaviour and airflow adequacy at the same time.
-   **Capacitor under load.** Not a visual check for bulging. A measurement taken while the compressor calls for start current, which is the only condition that exposes a degraded part.
-   **Static pressure testing.** Across the air handler, to establish whether the duct system is restricting the equipment.
-   **Amp draw.** Compressor and fan motors, compared to nameplate. Rising amp draw is an early warning on a motor heading toward failure.
-   **Contactor condition.** Pitting and welding, both of which end in a no-start.
-   **Coil condition and cleaning.** Condenser coil washed, evaporator coil inspected for fouling and biological growth.
-   **Condensate drain line.** Cleared, and the float switch tested if one is fitted. This one prevents ceiling damage.
-   **Filter and MERV rating check.** Including whether the filter you are using is too restrictive for your blower, which is a surprisingly common problem.
-   **Thermostat calibration.** Against an independent reading.

## The Warranty Angle Nobody Mentions

Most manufacturer warranties include a clause requiring documented annual maintenance performed by a qualified technician. It sits in the fine print and almost nobody reads it, right up until a compressor fails inside a ten-year parts warranty and the claim is questioned because there is no service history.

## Types of Maintenance Visit

**Spring cooling tune-up.** March or April. The most valuable visit of the year in this climate, because it catches the components that fail in July while replacing them is still an errand. It is also why we push homeowners to

**Fall heating check.** October. Furnaces here sit idle ten months a year and then get asked to run on the first genuinely cold night. Ignitors, flame sensors and inducer motors do not always survive that transition gracefully. Every gas furnace visit includes carbon monoxide testing.

**Post-dust-storm service.** Not scheduled, but worth knowing about. After a significant haboob, a condenser coil can load enough to cost real capacity. A coil wash is cheap and immediate.

Subcooling and superheat readings, which tell us whether the refrigerant charge is correct and whether the metering device is behaving. Static pressure testing across the air handler, which tells us whether the duct system is restricting the equipment. A capacitor test under load rather than a visual check. Condenser coil cleaning, condensate drain line clearance, filter inspection, blower compartment cleaning, amp draw on the compressor and fan motors against nameplate, contactor condition, and a thermostat calibration check. You get all of those recorded as numbers on a sheet you keep. What it is not is a free inspection whose real purpose is to generate a replacement quote. At $27 we are covering the technician's hour, which is precisely why the visit can be an inspection rather than a sales call.

### Is the $9.99 membership worth it?

It works out to $119.88 a year per unit and includes seasonal tune-ups in spring and fall, priority scheduling during peak season, and maintenance documentation that keeps manufacturer warranty claims valid. Whether it pays depends mostly on how much you value the scheduling. ### How often should an AC be serviced here?

Twice a year in most of our service area, which is more often than the national guidance and for a specific reason. That is a real financial exposure on equipment still inside a ten-year parts warranty, and it is one of the reasons we priced the tune-up low enough that skipping it is never the rational choice.

### Why do you test the capacitor under load?

Because a capacitor that measures within tolerance sitting at rest can still fail to deliver the start current the compressor needs under real conditions. Testing under load reveals a part that is degraded but not yet dead, which is exactly the part that strands you on a 115-degree afternoon. In our Arizona service area, capacitors commonly last three to five years rather than the eight to ten typical of milder climates, because sustained heat degrades the dielectric. Finding a weak one in April is a fifteen-minute part swap. Finding it in July is an emergency call.

### What is static pressure and why do you measure it?

Static pressure is the resistance the duct system puts up against the blower, and it is the airflow equivalent of blood pressure. Too high and the blower cannot move design airflow, which reduces capacity, freezes evaporator coils and shortens blower motor life. High static pressure is extremely common in older Mesa and Tempe housing where original ductwork was sized for smaller equipment. Most homeowners have never had it measured, which means a system that has underperformed for years has never been correctly diagnosed.

### Do you clean the ducts as part of the tune-up?

No, duct cleaning is a separate service with its own scope and pricing. The tune-up covers the equipment, the coils and the drain. If we see evidence during the visit that duct cleaning or sealing would genuinely help, we will tell you and price it separately rather than folding it in.

### How long does a tune-up take?

About an hour per unit for a proper one. A two-system home is roughly two hours. If a tune-up in this climate takes twenty minutes, measurements were skipped.

### When is the best time to book?

March and April for cooling, October for heating. Booking in June means competing with everyone whose system already failed, and it means finding a marginal capacitor at the moment when replacing it is an emergency rather than an errand.

### Do you service systems you did not install?

Yes, every major brand regardless of who installed it. If the equipment is still inside its manufacturer warranty we run the serial number, because plenty of what looks like a repair bill is a covered part plus labor.

### What if you find something during the tune-up?

We tell you what we found, show you the reading that supports it, and quote the fix flat-rate. You decide. There is no pressure and no manufactured urgency, and if the honest answer is that the part will probably hold another season, we will say that too.
